Expert Insight

Kesha Williams is a multi-certified, AWS Machine Learning Hero, Alexa Champion, and Director in Cloud Engineering who leads teams with a focus on growing early career technologists into cloud professionals and engineering leaders. We sat down with Kesha to find out what advice she’d give to budding cloud professionals and talent looking to take the next step up in their careers.

What advice would you give to professionals taking their first steps in their cloud computing career?
Your cloud computing career is a journey that doesn’t happen overnight. Give yourself time to properly learn the fundamentals and work hard to stay updated with the ever-evolving AWS ecosystem. Don’t study just to pass a certification exam— find an AWS user group in your city to hear from others on how the concepts you’re learning apply to the real world. Hands-on learning is the best way to retain knowledge, so be sure to practice in the AWS console!
Why do you think L&D is so important to tech professionals, and how does this benefit employers?
The AWS ecosystem is ever evolving, and keeping up with all the new features is often challenging. Setting time aside to explore new tools and technologies is essential to stay relevant in the marketplace. This exploration not only benefits tech professionals but employers as well. Organizations can bring more innovation to customers when employees have experience with the latest tools and technologies.
What are the most effective ways to upskill in tech?
The best way to upskill is to learn by doing—pick a problem you’d like to solve and learn as you build. Along the way, you’ll stop building to research a topic, and then incorporate this new knowledge into your application. Plus, you’ll have a new application to add to your portfolio to demonstrate your skills. Then, share your lessons learned with others by writing a blog post or speaking at an AWS user group.
What roles do leadership and mentorship play in bridging the skills gap and developing the next generation of tech talent?
Most of us are self-taught, so mentors help us identify learning gaps, which is vital when applying knowledge to real-world projects. Knowing which skillset will take you into the future is challenging, but mentors help us narrow our focus to ensure we’re learning the right technologies at the right time. When mentors and leaders share their lessons learned with others, it helps to jumpstart their journey!
